Back in July (2024), I got an early preview of Florida power metallers Seven Kingdoms new EP “The Square,” which officially dropped a couple of weeks ago. I wrote an immediate response mini-review then, but here is an update now that I have both had the chance to absorb it more AND am seeing them live for the first time ever tonight!

The title track kicks things off assertively, reminding of how “Stargazer” began the amazing Decennium album. It is a power metal banger, with a great opening, killer vocal melodies, and amazing lead guitar. Sabrina’s voice soars (very Brittney Hayes-like), and that choir section at the end really delivers. “Through These Waves” has a slower pace but a heavy thrashy groove, and the vocals are both infectious and phenomenal. “Wilted Pieces” is an 80’s time capsule, with a throwback arena rock feel, and this power ballad will make you feel all the feels. The Heart influence is a bit different from previous Seven Kingdoms material, but it works so well, and it adds a nice modern feel that doesn’t make it feel dated in any way. The chorus is the hero here, big and anthemic. “The Serpent and the Lotus” is the final new original song. It was my favorite during the private listening party, and it remains my favorite on the EP now. Besides having a t-shirt design dedicated to it, it brings back the speedy power metal. I love the infusion of the futuristic synthy feel, the main guitar riff throughout is absolutely killer, and Sabrina’s voice absolutely soars. Again, it is hard not to compare to Brittney Hayes here, and it is easy to see just how insanely talented of a vocalist Sabrina is. I really love the guitar solos, melodies, and constant frenetic pace, and the ending is just huge. The last track is a cover of “Kyrie” by Mr. Mister. It is possible you don’t know the song title, but it is very likely you would recognize the song upon hearing it. The band crushes this cover, injecting new life into it while bringing it into the 2020’s.

I love this new EP and am excited to see where the band goes next!
