I rarely review EPs, but this one smacked me so hard that I had to! Meteroa hails from Hungary and recently released this 4-song EP, “Broken Mind.” This is heavy symphonic gothic metal with wonderful orchestration and a heavy helping of death metal. Crushing guitars, intense drums, killer synths, incredible leads, and that bombastic orchestral atmosphere make for quite the incredible soundscape, energetic and powerful. Vocally you get a triple attack of female soprano, male goth, and brutal death metal growls that play off each other well. The songs are creative and well crafted, and it is a shame this only has 4 songs!

“Broken Mind” roars out of the gate with a synth-heavy driving melody, giving you both death metal and big symphonic vocals, punctuated by a heavy groove and well-placed blastbeats. The song feels so massive while being heavy and melodic, and what an ending! “Morningstar” has a more melancholic goth vibe while still feeling big. I love the back half sequence featuring male goth vocals, an atmospheric orchestra that slows things way down followed by a brutal death metal speedfest, and then a gothic symphonic closing. They manage to blend myriad textures that work so well in concert. “Elysion” is a goth rocker with symphonic metal scaffolding, mostly featuring clean male vocals and some great melodies. 7+ minute closer “In My Name” has a somber piano driven start and duels soprano and goth cleans as it builds, with its first climax a powerful symphonic death metal section with a gnarly groove. The song navigates gothic and death metal textures, with incredible orchestration. Check out the eerie piano section at the 4.5 minutes mark that transitions to a super heavy symphonic passage, gives a short reprisal, and then brutally rips your head off, before closing out in bombastic epic fashion!

This is some of the best heavy symphonic metal I have heard in awhile. These 4 songs are fantastic, and I hope the band has plans for a full length. And someone should sign them!
